A SparQ for Innovation on Campus

New SparQ Studios

SparQ Studios, previously located in the Integrated Learning Centre and known as SparQ Labs, officially opened its doors in Carruthers Hall in December. As Queen’s Innovation Connector’s makerspace and design studio, SparQ Studios gives students from all disciplines access to the space and many of the tools they need to develop their projects and prototypes.

QICSI companies Gryllies and Lumos take first and second place at UPStart Pitch Competition

Gryllies recently won UPstart, a pitch competition held in Toronto by Queen's Venture Network in Smith School of Business. The victory comes four months after the company was judged the most promising venture to emerge from the 2015 Queen's Innovation Connector Summer Initiative (QICSI). Another QICSI venture, Lumos Energy Strips, took home the second prize of $10,000 at the pitch competition.

SparQ Studios is settled into its new home on the first floor of Carruthers Hall, after being housed in Beamish Munro Hall since its inception in 2013. SparQ Studios is a Queen's Innovation Connector (QIC) organization operated by a multidisciplinary team of Queen's students. The Carruthers location features new equipment, a large workshop and co-working area, a meeting room, and a lounge area for teamwork and brainstorming.

Pitch Your Venture at UPstart: Pitch - Passion - Purpose

UPstart, an initiative led by Queen’s Venture Network, has been created to accelerate ideas and give alumni and students the opportunity to present creative business plans to a panel of experienced judges. Event attendees, including potential investors, will also provide the opportunity to take an advance look at up-and-coming entrepreneurs and new ventures.

The Queen's Innovation Connector (QIC) is hiring a QIC Summer Intiative (QICSI) Coordinator for the summer of 2016. The Coordinator will be involved in all aspects of running the program and will develop a variety of skills relevant to a career as an entrepreneur, management consultant, project manager or working in the start-up community. Applications go live December 21, 2015 and close at noon on February 11, 2016.

IT'S A START Pitch Competition Opens Call for Submissions

Digifest, Toronto's largest internationl festival that celebrates digital creativity, will be held at Corus Quay from April 28-30, 2016. This year's theme is "Design, Technology and Entrepreneurship". Submissions are currently being accepted for the annual IT'S A START Pitch Competition, an interactive competition that makes up a large part of this event.

QIC Goes to Boston

Fifteen students and recent graduates took part in a three-day trip to Boston organized by the Queen's Innovation Connector. The focal point of the trip was attending the awards ceremony for the MassChallenge, a global start-up competition and accelerator program. However the trip also provided the Queen's students and alumni with a fresh perspective on entrepreneurship.
