DDQIC Prepares to Attend India’s Largest Social Entrepreneurship Conference

The Deshpande Foundation, founded by Queen’s alumnus Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande (PhD’79) and his wife Jaishree, hosts Development Dialogue, which takes place Jan. 28-29 in Hubballi. The conference brings together 500 delegates from around the world who advance innovative and entrepreneurial ideas to solve complex social challenges. The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre will lead a small delegation from Queen's University that includes QICSI alumni, representatives from student-led entrepreneurship conferences and members of the DDQIC executive.

The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre (DDQIC) is hiring a Makerspace Development Director for the summer of 2017. The Director will be involved in all aspects of running SparQ Studios. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the makerspace, implementing its development plans and supporting summer entrepreneurship programs as well as student venture prototyping. Applications close on March 27, 2017.

The Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre (DDQIC) is hiring a QIC Summer Initiative (QICSI) Coordinator for the summer of 2017. The QICSI Coordinator will be involved in all aspects of running the program and will develop a variety of skills relevant to a career as an entrepreneur, management consultant, project manager or working in the start-up community. Applications close at noon on February 9, 2017.

With the support of both the Deshpande Innovation Network and the Dunin Foundation, the DDQIC is well on its way to becoming a leader in student innovation both nationally and globally. A Game-Changing Investment in Innovation

On Oct. 11, Queen's announced that it had received a $31 million investment from the Government of Canada under the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (SIF). The investment will support two capital projects on campus including the creation of the Queen’s Innovation and Wellness Centre.Construction has begun for this new Innovation and Wellness Centre on campus that will be home to an ‘Innovation Hub’ centred around DDQIC.

After 14 weeks of hard work, our eight QICSI ventures stepped out onto the Isabel Bader's stage to present in the 2016 QICSI Final Pitch Competition. The competition was a huge success with many esteemed guests and QICSI alumni attending the event. The panel of five judges awarded four teams with prize money to put towards their companies. We can't wait to see what all the 2016 QICSI ventures accomplish in the upcoming months!

In less than two weeks, the eight 2016 QICSI teams will go head-to-head in the final pitch competition, where they will try to impress the panel of expert judges for the chance to win up to $30,000 in seed funding for their business. This exciting event celebrates QIC's fifth anniversary and as well as the growing spirit of innovation sprouting within our communities.

A SparQ for Innovation on Campus

SparQ Studios, previously located in the Integrated Learning Centre and known as SparQ Labs, officially opened its doors in Carruthers Hall in December. As Queen’s Innovation Connector’s makerspace and design studio, SparQ Studios gives students from all disciplines access to the space and many of the tools they need to develop their projects and prototypes.

QICSI companies Gryllies and Lumos take first and second place at UPStart Pitch Competition

Gryllies recently won UPstart, a pitch competition held in Toronto by Queen's Venture Network in Smith School of Business. The victory comes four months after the company was judged the most promising venture to emerge from the 2015 Queen's Innovation Connector Summer Initiative (QICSI). Another QICSI venture, Lumos Energy Strips, took home the second prize of $10,000 at the pitch competition.
