The reason this is happening is because most PDA devices use a Web browser that is just not rich enough to work with the Queen’s Webmail site.
Use an Email client that is native to your PDA device.
When you use Mozilla Firefox and Queen’s Webmail to send an e-mail with MS Office attachments and the filename is long, some e-mail recipients, mainly Eudora users, receive the message but not the attachment. Instead of the attachment the message contains text similar to:
Content-Type: application/applefile
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="long file name of a Word doc here," _more text.doc"
Solution:
Use Internet Explorer, or an email client such as Microsoft Outlook.
The first step to manage Queen's email before account termination is to configure a forward on the Queen's email account. This will ensure that you receive incoming Queen's email at your alternate email address until the date of termination. Forward tutorial can be found here. http://www.queensu.ca/its/email/faqs.html#one
Users have a number of options available to retrieve and store email from their webmail account.
Windows and Apple OSX Client Configuration tutorials can be found here: http://www.queensu.ca/its/email/tutorials.html
How to deal with spam is discussed in the Network Policies
There are limitations on the size of emails (including their attachments) that you can send, Large emails cause problems in the sending and receiving of emails and can cause the receipient of your email to go over their email quota, lose email, and have trouble downloading their email.
If you are sending images reduce their size before you attach them to your email. There is a good article with instructions on reducing the size of images in the Fall 2010 Newsletter.
If you cannot reduce the size of the email attachment then consider uploading the attachement to a file sharing server. Queen's provides QShare for use by Students, Faculty, and Staff. QShare allows you to upload your files to your QShare space and then send a Link (for anyone with a Queen's NetID) or a ticket (for anyone who does not have a Queen's NetID) inviting people to view your files. They can then download them - without using email - to their own computer. QShare is well documented with tutorials available in HTML and/or video format at http://www.queensu.ca/its/qshare/tutorials.html QShare also has collaboration tools that let you track who and when a file has been accessed.
