Configure Outlook Express using IMAP

 

Note: These instructions and screen shots were made using Outlook Express version 6. However, they should work for other versions of Outlook Express.


Note:   In order to produce the screen shots Outlook Express has been configured using an email account used by IT Services for documentation purposes. When following these instructions and configuring your client please use your own name and email address.  The instructions that accompany each screen shot will indicate whether to use your email address or the provided server name. If in doubt, contact the IT Support Centre at 613.533.6666.   

  1. Launch Outlook Express
    • select Set up a mail account...
      choose setup a mail account link

  2. The Internet Connect Wizard will begin
    • Click the radio button beside Create a new Internet mail account
    • Click the Next button

      choose Ceate new internet mail account
  3. The Your Name screen will open
    • In the Display name: dialogue box enter your name
    • Click the Next button
      enter the display name
  4. The Internet E-mail Address screen will open
    • Enter your e-mail address
    • Click the Next button
      Enter the email address
  5. The E-mail Server Names screen is displayed.
    • From the Server drop down box select IMAP.
    • In the Incoming Mail Server box enter: mail.queensu.ca
    • In the Outgoing Mail Server box enter: mail.queensu.ca
    • click the Next button to continue.

  6. The Internet Mail Logon screen will be displayed.
    • In the Account name: dialogue box enter your NetID.
    • Note: if you want Outlook Express to save your password, click the check box Remember password, and enter your password. Anyone using this computer will have access to your e-mail.
    • click the Next button to continue.

  7. The Congratulations screen open
    • Your Outlook Express account has been configured to send/receive e-mail. However there are a few manual configurations you should make.
    • Click the Finish button and continue.
      Completed
  8. Outlook Express will ask you if you want to download folders from the mail server
    • Click the Yes button
      choose yes to download folders from the file server

  9. The Show/Hide IMAP Folders screen will open
    • Click the OK button
      Show or hide the corresponding folders
  10. Outlook Express will start
    • You will see the folders that have been downloaded to your computer from mail.queensu.ca
    • Note that these folders are located on the server andnot on your computer
      The server folders are displayed on the left pane
  11. You now have 2 sets of folders
    • Local Folders - these files exist on your computer only
    • mail.queensu.ca folders - these file exist on the server

  12. From the Tools menu select Accounts
    Choose Accounts from tools menu
  13. The Internet Accounts screen will open and the All tab will be displayed
    • Click on your mail.queensu.ca account to select it and
    • Click the Properties button
      choose the mail and its properties
  14. The Properties Screen will open
    • In the Mail Account dialogue box your e-mail account is listed. You can re-name this if you like.
    • In our screenshot we have re-named out Mail Account to Queen's E-mail
    • If the Reply address: dialogue box is empty enter your e-mail address
    • Click the Apply button

  15. Click the IMAP tab
    • On the Queen's E-mail server there is no Root folder path. If there is anything in this dialogue box, remove it.
    • Click the Apply button
      choose or enter the root folder information
  16. Click the Advanced tab
    • In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP): Check the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and enter the port number 465
    • In the Incoming mail (IMAP): Check the box This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and enter the port number 993
    • Set the Server Timeouts to Long
    • Click the Apply button

  17. Click the Servers tab
    • Check the box My server requires authentication
    • Click the Settings button
      choose my server requires authentication option
  18. The Outgoing Mail Server screen will open
    • Check the radio button beside Use same settings as my incoming mail server 
    • Click the OK button

  19. The Servers tab will re-open
    • Click the Apply button
      change or set the necesary properties
  20. The Internet Accounts screen will re-open
    • Click the Close button

  21. Outlook Express will ask you if you would like to refresh your folder list.
    • Click the Yes button
      to refresh choose yes
  22. The Logon Screen will open
    • enter your password and
    • Click the OK button
      enter the login information
  23. The Downloading Folders screen will open while your folders are being downloaded
    • When it is finished you are ready to use Outlook Express to send and receive e-mail

Outlook Express has now been configured to use IMAP.
