Configure Apple's Mail Client Using IMAP for Mac OS X 10.6.8
The following instructions were created using Apple's Mail client version 4.5.
Note KGH/HDH users: IMAP is not available on the KGH/HDH Networks, only POP configurations will work.
- With Apple's Mail Client open
- From the File menu select Add Account...
- The New Account screen will open
- In the Full Name: dialogue box enter
your full name
- In the Email Address: dialogue box enter
your e-mail address
- Click the
Continue button,
- Then the Incoming Mail server screen will open
- from the Account Type: menu select
IMAP
- in the Account Description: dialogue box enter the name you want this e-mail account to be displayed as. ie. Queens
- In the Incoming Mail Server: dialogue box enter
mail.queensu.ca
- In the User Name: dialogue box enter your
NetID
- Click the
Continuebutton
- The Incoming Mail Security screen will open
- Check the box
Use Secure socket Layer (SSL)
- from the Authentication: menu select
Password
- Click the
Continuebutton
- The Outgoing Mail Server screen will open
- in the Outgoing Mail Server: dialogue box enter
mail.queensu.ca
- Do not select Use Authentication. Queen's uses an alternative port for Outgoing Mail Authentication (SSL). The proper port will be selected manually later in second part of the tutorial "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) tutorial".
- Click the
Continue button
- Click the
Continue button, ignoring the error. It will be corrected later on.
- The Account Summary screen will open
- Check to make sure the correct information has been entered
Note: If you used Queen's IMAP the Outgoing Mail Server will show
SSL: on
- Click the
Continue button
- Apple's Mail client has now been configured to receive email via the IMAP protocol. The next step is to configure outgoing mail settings. To do this follow the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) tutorial.
