Configure Apple Mail 10.5 to use SSL and SMTP Authentication


Note:  If your office is located at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) or Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH) do not use this documentation. KGH does not support  SSL and SMTP Authorization.  
 

 

1. Open Apple Mail then 

  • Click the Mail menu, the select Preferences
  • Click  the Accounts button on the top toolbar
  • Under the Account column click the account that needs to be changed
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Check the box  Use SSL 
    • If your email is configured for POP set the port to 995
    • If your email is configured for IMAP set the port to 993
  • Make sure Authentication is set to password

2. Select the Account Information tab

  • At bottom of window, you should see Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
  • Click on the up/down arrow on right hand side, this will bring up Edit Server List... option in a menu.

3. Select Edit Server List...

4. The Account Information screen will open

  • Select the Advanced tab

5. On  the  Advanced tab,

  • select Use custom port and set the port to 465
  • Select Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
  • To enable SMTP Authentication, select Authentication type as Password and enter your Queen's NetID and password
  • Click OK

6. Close the Preference window.

7. Send your self a test message to confirm things are working.
