The your.name email alias is an option that Faculty, Staff, and Students can use to make their email address appear as their real name instead of their sometimes cryptic email address.
Everyone at Queen's can have an email address. It is usually yourNetID@queensu.ca (for example 9at3@queensu.ca). This email address can seem cryptic to people you send email to and it is difficult to know who sent the email if a signature is not provided.
Queen's now makes available an email alias to your email address. It is based on your real name as it appears in our LDAP database. It does not replace your original email address and it is not a second email address. It is a more user friendly pointer to your email address.
When you request your email alias it will be based on your real name as it appears in Queen's LDAP Databases. The HR records for Faculty, Staff, or the Registrar's QCard database for Students. You will be given a choice of up to 5 variations of your name to choose from. You will be able to select only one. Once you make your selection it will be assigned to your NetID. You will have the option to activate your email alias.
If you chose to activate it, 2 changes will be made for you.
Once your email alias has been assigned it will be attached to your NetID until your NetID is removed from the system.
You have the option to use your.name email alias once your have created it, or you can not use it. Either way, once it is created it will be "attached" to your NetID.
To activate your your.name email alias go to the Identity Manager page at https://netid.queensu.ca
If you use an email client such as Outlook you can configure your client to use your email alias.
