Configure Remote Desktop connection for Windows

Remote Desktop Connection Client is already available in Windows 7 and Windows 8


Windows 7

  1. Launch the Remote Desktop App
    • From the Start menu select All Programs
    • In the search box start entering Remote Desktop.  As you do, the search will begin and you will see Remote Desktop Connection.
    • Click Remote Desktop Connection to start the program

  2. The Remote Desktop Connection will start
    • Click the Show Options button to expand the screen

  3. The Remote Desktop Connection  tabs will now be visible
    • From the Advanced tab click the Settings... button

  4. The RD Gateway Server Settings screen will open
    • Click the radio button beside Use these RD Gateway server settings:
    • In the Server name: field enter qdg.queensu.ca
    • From the Logon Method: drop down menu select Ask for Password (NTLM)
    • The Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses should be checked
    • OPTIONAL - Check the box beside Use my "RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer" only if you are connecting to a system with your NetID and password, otherwise, leave this box unchecked
    • Click the OK button

  5. The Remote Desktop Connection screen will re-open
    • Click the General tab to open it
    • In the Computer: field enter the hosts computer's name or IP number that you wish to connect to
      For example: To connect to the Remote Access Server enter  its-ts03.ad.queensu.ca
    • Leave the User name: field empty.  You will be prompted for the user name when you connect
    • Click the Save As... button to save your connect details
    • Click the Connect button

Windows 8 and Windows 10

  1. Start the Remote Desktop Connection app
    • From the Start screen start typing Remote Desktop Connection.  The Search menu will open and apps that match your criteria will be displayed.
    • Click Remote Desktop Connection to start it

  2. The Remote Desktop Connection screen will open
    • Click the Show Options button

  3. The Remote Desktop Connection full screen will now be visible
    • Click the Advanced tab to select it
    • Click the Settings... button
