Install TSM for Windows 


Important changes:

  • TSMDaily is a scheduler for TSM Backup that was available for Windows 7 and older. It is no longer supported.  Windows users must now run TSM Backup manually. See the last section, Running TSM Backup Manually  for instructions.
  • It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that TSM is configured correctly and is backing up correctly. The ITSC can help if needed: 613.533.6666.

How to obtain TSM for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

  1. TSM requires licensing and payment. Please submit  this form  to request a TSM Personal or Departmental Account.
  2. To download TSM for Windows, log in to MyQueensU with your NetID and password
  3. Click on Software Centre in the main menu. A link to download the  TSM client is available on this page. 
  4. Download TSM installer and note the download location.
    • Open the file location
    • locate the 7.1.4.4-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exe and click it to run
    • the Data file and the file PkgStarter.exe will be uncompressed
    • Double click the PkgStarter.exe file to being the InstallShield Wizard

  5. The InstallShield Wizard will begin
    • As the installation continues you will be provided the opportunity to accept different options or change them. 
    • Click the Next button to continue.
    • The Installation will continue until TSM is completely installed.

Installing TSM

  1. Double-click the downloaded file to launch it.
    • The TSM Client Configuration Wizard will begin
    • Note: You must be logged in with an administrative account.
    • Click the Next button

  2. The Options File Task screen will open
    • Select Create a new options file
    • Click the Next button

  3. The TSM Client Node Name screen will open
    • Enter the TSM Node Name (username) that was provided by ITServices
    • Click the Next button

  4. The TSM Client/Server Communications screen will open
    • Select TCP/IP
    • Click the Next button

  5. The TCP/IP Options screen will open
    • In the Server Address field, enter tsm-dupuis.ad.queensu.ca
    • Note:  if you are backing up from off campus, you require a Cisco AnyConnect VPN connection to vpn.queensu.ca/campus
    • In the Port Number field, enter 1500
    • Click the Next button

  6. The Recommended Include/Exclude List screen will open
    • This list consists of temp files, system files and other similar files to exclude or include from your TSM backup
    • It is recommended that you keep them
    • For more information, see the section on Excluding/Including files below
    • Click the Next button

  7. The Common File Exclusion Selection screen will open
    • Files can be excluded based on their file type.
    • No action is necessary
    • Click the Next button

  8. The Domain for Backup screen will open
    • These are the drives on your computer (C: and maybe D: or E:)
    • If any of the drives do not contain data (for example, the partition where your system's recovery files are stored), you may want to remove that drive from the list.
    • Click the Next button

  9. The Confirm and Apply your configuration screen will open
    • Click the Apply button

  10. The Completing your configuration screen will open
    • TSM is completing the installation and configuration
    • Wait for the operation to be completed

  11. The TSM Login screen will open
    • In the User Id: field, enter your Node Name (TSM Username that ITServices provided)
    • In the Password field, enter your TSM password
    • Note: these are NOT your NetID and NetID password
    • If you do not know your TMS Username and password contact the IT Support Centre at 613.533.6666
    • Click the Login button

  12. The Completing your configuration screen will open
    • Click the Finish button

Launching and Usage Configuration

  1. Launch the TSM application
    • Select Edit
    • From the drop down menu, select Client Preferences

  2. The General Preferences screen will open. The following Preferences should be set:
    • Your Node Name should be displayed
    • Back up or restore NTFS security information is selected
    • Transaction Buffer Size is 25600
    • Automatic Client Deployment is set to Yes
    • Error Log File name
    • Select the Backup Tab

  3. The Backup Preferences screen is displayed.
    • Select Compress objects
    • Select Continue compressing if object grows
    • Select Back up only DFS mount point information
    • Back up all local file systems is selected
    • If you do not want one of the listed drives backed up, unselect it.
    • Select the Restore tab

  4. The Restore tab will open
    • Select Ask user before replacing
    • Click the Communication tab

  5. The Communication tab will be displayed
    • Restart Duration is set to 60
    • Restart Interval is 15
    • Communication Method is TCP/IP
    • Server Address is tsm-dupuis.ad.queensu.ca
    • Server Port is 1500
    • Admin Port is 1500
    • Buffer Size is 32
    • Window Size is 63
    • Send transaction to the server immediately is selected
    • Click Apply
    • Click OK
    • Your Configuration is complete
    • Exit TSM

Configuring Excludes and Includes

It is necessary to configure excludes and includes in order to reduce backup size. IMPORTANT: Be careful, a mistake here could prevent your data from being backed up.

  1. Launch TSM
    • From the menu, select Edit
    • From the drop down menu, select Client Preferences

  2. The Preference Editor will open
    • Select the Include-Exclude tab
    • Be certain that the include path(s) are the locations where your data is located.
    • Usually, the paths shown are where most people store their data: The Documents and/or Desktop folders.
    • If you store your data in a different location, you will need to include that location or your data will not be backed up.
    • This example shows one exclude and one include, you may want or need to have more.
    • Note: It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that their data is being backed up. This document is only a guideline on how to use the Exclude/Includes with TSM.

  3. Click the Add button to open the Define Include-Exclude Options window.
    • In the Category field, select Backup
    • In the Type field, select Exclude
    • In the File or Pattern field, enter C:\...\*
    • This exclusion forces TSM to exclude everything. You must now add an Include of your data folders, otherwise nothing will be backed up.
    • Click OK to save the Exclude

  4. Click the Add button to create an Include statement
    • The Screen shot shows one option.
    • It is critical that you add an Include for the folders where you have data. My Documents or Desktop are good choices.
    • Sub-folders will be included when parent folders are specified.
    • Note: This exclude/include list will first back up nothing, then it forces TSM to then include everything within the User's profile called YourName (see below). This would include: My Documents, Desktop files and even temporary Internet files. A more aggressive Include could select your Documents, your Desktop folders and any other folder where you have data stored. It is critical to include all folders where your data is stored.
    • Example paths for Includes are as follows: C:\Users\YourName\Documents\...\* and/or C:\Users\YourName\Desktop\...\* and/or C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\...\*. These inclusions only back up the folders specified and would not include unwanted temporary files. This is a good way to do it; but if you ever add a folder that is not Included, it may not get backed up.
    • Very important: Once you have decided which folders to include, be sure the path is correct. Here is an example of the path and how it should be entered into the Include Path:
      C:\Users\YourNetID\...\* or C:\Users\YourNetID\Documents\...\* and/or
      C:\Users\YourNetID\Desktop\...\*
      After the path, you must have a backslash \ and three dots... then another backslash \ and a star *
      A correct path is C:\Users\Name\Documents\...\*
    • TSM will insert the quotations so don't need to insert them manually.
       
    • Click Apply and
    • Click Ok
    • Exit TSM.

Running TSM Backup manually

Note: TSM on Windows 8 does not have a scheduler, so you must run TSM manually. Should this ever change, this document will be updated accordingly.
