Mapping a Network Drive to a File Share with Windows 7

Mapping a Network Drive to a File Share

A mapped drive is like a shortcut. The location of a mapped networked drive is stored in the Network section of the File Manager. You can manually open a networked drive by clicking on the link within File Manager. You can also have the mapped drive connect automatically each time you log into the computer.

  1. Open the Start menu
    • Right mouse click on Computer
    • From the flyout menu select Map network drive...

  2. The Map Network Drive screen will open
    • From the Drive: drop down menu, select a letter to associate with the mapped drive. Do not choose one that is already used by the system (A, C, D, etc.) or one that has already been used to map another drive.
    • In the Folder:  field enter the connection string that has been provided to you (by your IT Admin Rep)
    • If you would like to reconnect automatically check the box beside Reconnect at logon
    • Sometimes the credentials for the computer are different from the ones you need to connect to the share with.  When this is the case, check the box beside Connect using different credentials
    • Click the Finish button
