Activate Your Account

Now that you have been informed that you can activate your NetID, please complete the steps below.  If you do not know your student number, please contact the Office of the Registrar at 613-533-2040.

Note:  Once your NetID is assigned, it cannot be changed except in circumstances where harassment has occurred. A name change due to marriage or divorce is not a strong enough reason to change a NetID.


  1. Go to: https://netid.queensu.ca/self-service
    • The NetID Profile Manager will open
    • Select Activate your account

  2. The Activate Your Account - Verify Your Identity screen will open
    • From the Account Type: menu select your affiliation.  Your options are Employee or Student/Alumni
    • Enter your Employee Staff number or your Student number - whichever applies to you
    • Enter your date of birth as YYYYMMDD
    • Click the Continue button

  3. The Activate Your Account - Step 1 of 6 - Accept Policies screen will open
    • Read the Queen's University Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy (Note: right click and select open in new tab)
    • Students Only: - Read the Copyright Guidelines for Queen's Students
    • Check the box beside I have read & accept the Queen's University Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy
    • Check the box beside I agree not to use the Queen's University computing network or resources to perform illegal activities (including copyright infringement)
    • Students only:  Check the box beside  I acknowledge that I have read and accept the Copyright Guidelines for Queen's Students
    • Click the CONTINUE button

  4. The Activate Your Account - Step 2 of 6 - Modify Your Alternate Email screen will open
    • Note:  Providing an Account Recovery Email is optional - but highly recommended.  Without an Account Recovery Email you will not be able to reset your password should you forget it or be locked out of your account.  If you choose not to provide an Account Recovery Email click the Continue button
    • In the Account Recovery Email  field enter a non-Queen's email address
    • Click the Continue button

  5. The Activate Your Account - Step 3 of 6 - Modify Your Security Questions screen will open
    • Note: You must choose at least three question (3) and they must be in the first three question slots.  To change the question select the question of your choice from the drop down list.  You can choose to answer more than three questions.
    • You will need to choose three (3) questions with different answers.  Each answer must be at least four (4) characters in length.
    • From the questions drop down list choose a question
    • Provide the answer to your question. 
    • Note: Security Questions must be at least four (4) characters long and the question cannot be used more than once
    • Click the Continue button

  6. The Activate Your Account - Step 4 of 6 - Modify Your Publishing Options screen will open
    • Note: Employees will not see the Set Publishing Options screen
    • The Queen's Online Directory is available through the web and can be accessed by anyone
      • By default, a student's degree and/or program information and their Queen's email address is not published in the Queen's Online Directory
      • If a student would like this information available to the public they can uncheck the boxes beside one or both of the options
    • The Queen's Global Address List (GAL) is only accessible by current Queen's employees and students.  
      • The Global Address List (GAL) contains the names and email addresses of everyone with an active Queen's email account.
      • It is visible to those using an email client (e.g. Microsoft Office 2016) to access their Queen's email, as well as to those accessing Queen's email using the Outlook Web App (OWA) and Office 365.
      • The names and email addresses published in the GAL are not publicly available - they are visible only to the members of the Queen's community in order to facilitate email and calendar communications across the University.
      • By default students names and email address will be published in the GAL. If a student would prefer not to have their name published in the GAL they can check this option.
    • Click the Continue button

  7. The Activate Your Account - Step 5 of 6 - Set New Password screen will open
    • The required length and complexity of your password will depend on your role at Queen's. The default is a minimum of 10 characters in length and a mix of uppercase, lowercase, digits and special characters.
    • In the Password: field enter your password. 
    • In the Confirm Password: field re-enter your password. Do not copy and paste. If you misspelled your original password you would be copying the error and not able to log in.
    • Click the Continue button

  8. The Activate Your Account - Step 6 of 6 - Account Claim Complete  screen will open
    • Your NetID will be displayed. Write it down
    • If an email address has been assigned it will be displayed. Write it down
    • Your NetID is now activated. 
    • Note: Once your NetID is activated you will be able to use it to Manage your account immediately, however it will take approximately 5 minutes before your email account can be accessed.  Other services that require NetID authentication may take longer.
    • Click the Continue button

  9. The NetID Profile Manager screen will re-open
    • You can close your browser or you can choose to log in and Manage your account.
    • Note: If you want to create an email alias log into your account, select Manage your email options
