Windows 7 Dial-Up Tutorial


Dial in modem pools are still available for those users who do not have access to high speed internet service. 


There are Free lines and Toll lines available.


Note:  If you dial long distance to access the modem pool the normal long distance rates of your telephone service provider will apply.


Configure your Modem to dial in 

 

  1. From the Start menu  
    • Select Control Panel
  2. The Control Panel screen will be displayed 
    • Click on the Network and Internet link

  3. The Network and Internet screen will open 
    • In the Network and Sharing Center click on Connect to a network

  4. The  View your basic network information and set up connections screen will open 
    • Click on the Set up a new connection or network link

  5. The Set Up a Connection or Network screen will open 
    • Click on the Set up a dial-up connection Connect to the Internet using a dial-up connection link
    • Click the Next button

  6. The Create a Dial-up Connection screen will open 
    • enter the phone number of the modem pool you wish to dial into (in our screen shot we are using the toll modem pool).  For more details on phone numbers and charges see the ITService Service Fee web page
    • Enter your Queen's NetID
    • Enter your NetID's password
    • You can choose to Remember this password, however we do not recommend this
    • Give your connection a name - something you will recognise.  We have called our's Dialing From Home.  Note: you may have more than one dial-in connection.
    • Click the Connect button
    • Your Computer will connect
    Create a Dial-up Connection  


Connect using your Modem

 

  1. Open the Start menu 
    • Select the Control Panel

  2. The Control Panel screen will open 
    • In the Network and Internet section select
    • Connect to the Internet

  3. The Connect to the Internet screen will open 
    • click the radio button beside Yes, I'll choose an existing connection
    • Click on the Dial-up Connection you wish to connect to
    • Click the Next button
    • Note:  you can have more than one connection to choose from.  You could have connections for the Toll modem pool and the Free model pool

  4. The Connect Dial-up Connection screen will open 
    • In the User name: box enter your NetID (if it isn't already there)
    • In the Password: box enter your NetID's password
    • Click the Dial button
  5. The Connecting to Dial-up Connection... screen will open 
    • if your audio is turned on you should hear as the modem connects to the modem pool
  6. The Connecting to Dial-up Connection...  screen will remain op 
    • Verifying user name and password... will be displayed
    • Once verified you will be connected

     

 


Disconnect your modem

  1. On the System Tray locate your modem's icon.  If it is not displayed click the triangle to show all the task icons. 
    • Click on the icon to open it
  2. The Currently connected to: screen will open 
    • Click on the Connect link
  3. The Dial-up connection will expand to show the Disconnect button 
    • Click the Disconnect button
  4. the screen title will change to Not connect 
    • Your modem has been disconnected and you are no longer connected to the Internet
