Configure Windows XP for a Dial-Up Connection


If you are dialing into the Queen's Modem pool this tutorial will help you configure your modem connection. 


Please see the Service Fees page for a listing of the different phone numbers and costs associated with them.


  1. Open the Startmenu 
    • Click on All Programs
    • Click on Control Panel to open it

  2. The Control Panel screen will open 
    • Click the Network Connections icon to open it

    • Click the Create a new connection

  4. The New Connection Wizard will begin 
    • Click the Next button

  5. The Network Connection Type screen will open 
    • Click the radio button beside Connect to the Internet
    • Click the Next button

  6. The Getting Ready screen will open 
    • Click the radio button beside Set up my connection manually
    • Click the Next button

  7. The Internet Connection screen will open 
    • Click the radio button beside Connect using a dial-up modem
    • Click the Next button

  8. The Connection Name screen will open 
    • Give the connection a name you will recognize as your dial-in connection. 
      Note:  There are several dial-in modem pools that Queen's has that you could create a dial in connection for.  You could have one for the free modem line, another for the toll modem line. etc.
    • Click the Next button

  9. The Phone Number to Dial screen will open 
    • Enter the phone number for the modem pool you wish to access.  To see what is available go to the Service Fees page.  In our screen shot we will connect to the Toll line (available to students, Faculty and Staff) enter 613-533.0646.
    • Note:  if you are dialing long distance you will need to put a 1 in front of the number.  Normal long distance charges will apply.
    • Click the Next button

  10. The Internet Account Information screen will open 
    • In the User name: box enter your NetID
    • In the Password: box enter your NetID password
    • In the Confirm password: box re-enter your password
    • You can choose to make your NetID and password available to anyone using this computer.
    • You can choose to make this the default Internet connection.  If your computer has an ethernet card that you will use while in your office do not set this as the default Internet connection.
    • Click the Nextbutton

  11. The Completing the New Connection Wizard screen will open 
    • Check the box to add a shortcut to your desktop
    • Click the Finish button

  12. To connect to the Internet click the Desktop icon for the connection you just made.  The Connect Queen's Dial-Up (this will be the name you gave your connection) screen will open 
    • Enter your NetID
    • Enter your Password
    • Choose if you want others to have access to your dial-up connection
    • Make sure the phone number is correct.
    • Click the Dial button

  13. The Connecting Queen's Dial-Up... screen will open 
    • your computer will dial the number and make a connection to the Internet
    • Once the connection is made you will be able to check your email, surf the web, etc

  14. Don't forget to disconnect  
    • In the System tray click on the modem icon

  15. The Dial-Up Status screen will open 
    • Click the Disconnect button
