IP Address Allocation


The Queen’s network will automatically assign IP configuration information to client devices configured to automatically obtain this information using DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol). This is the default setup for most devices. IP addresses assigned this way are used by the device for the length of their network session. Devices will not necessarily be assigned the same IP address for every session. Users requiring reserved IP addressing can request IP assignments tied to a device's MAC (physical address) by submitting a request to the IT Support Centre.

 

Getting Started

Eligibility:

  • Staff and faculty
  • Requests should be submitted via the department's ITAdmin Rep.

  • None

Requirements & Availability:

Hardware required for this service:

  • Any device with a MAC address that requires a static IP number (e.g. servers, network printers, computers requiring access to restricted services)


Software required for this service:

  • no special software is required to use this service. 
  • The IT Support Centre will require the following to reserve an IP:
    • the building, office or room number;
    • name of the department;
    • jack number (if visible);
    • MAC address of the ethernet adapter; and
    • the equipment owner's contact information.
