Upgrades to Queen's Network Coming This Summer


ITServices is planning a number of changes to the campus infrastructure this summer that will result in improved network service. Users can expect better performance on both the wired and wireless networks. The upgrades will also provide greater network stability and reliability, and offer enhanced security features.


Service Disruption May 6


The changes will occur in phases over the summer. The first phase will take place over the weekend of May 5-6, 2012. At that time, the operating system will be upgraded on our two core network switches. As well, an older, third switch will be retired and its traffic will be re-routed via the two core switches.


These changes are scheduled to take place between 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 on Sunday, May 6. During this window, there will be intervals where there is no campus network or Internet service. This means that:


  • Queen's websites will be unavailable;
  • online applications (for example, Moodle, SOLUS, PeopleSoft) will not be accessible; and
  • there will be no Queen's email service. Email sent to and from Queen's addresses during those times will be held until the outages are over.

We are aware that we now live in a 24/7 world and service disruptions will inconvenience some users. Every effort has therefore been made to schedule outages at off-hours and to keep them as brief as possible.


Future Work


Though more outages will be required to complete the upgrade work this summer, they will be briefer and less disruptive. Notification will be provided when future work is scheduled.
