Carleton hit by ransomware attack - is Queen's at risk?

On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, Carleton University experienced a ransomware attack which affected their IT network. An external individual or group of hackers have demanded payment in exchange for the return of their files.

Yes. While Information Technology Services (ITS) has measures in place to prevent these types of attacks from occurring on our network, there is no way to guarantee that we will not be affected by this kind of attack.

Can I help prevent an attack?

Cyber security is everyone’s responsibility at Queen’s University. Ensure you:

  • Don’t click on unknown links or files!
  • Don’t open unexpected email attachments.
  • Don't click on any links asking you to verify your credentials.
  • Ensure you have an anti-virus software installed.
  • Keep your operating system and browsers up-to-date.
  • Keep your application software up-to-date.
  • Back up your data regularly.

What should I do if I suspect my computer has been infected?

If you suspect that your computer may be infected with ransomware or any other type of malware, please contact the IT Support Centre immediately by calling 613.533.6666 or by filling in the Online Help Form. Forward any suspicious emails to abuse@queensu.ca.

ITS will never ask you for your NetID password.
