End-of-Life for Windows XP and Office 2003

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP and Office 2003. After this date, there will be no new security updates or patches for either product. Many third-party software vendors will also cease to support their products that run on Windows XP. Anyone continuing to use these products will be at risk for security vulnerabilities.

For end user information and assessment tools that can assist you in the transition, please refer to the Microsoft website:

What does this mean to the Queen's community?

When Microsoft discontinues support for Windows XP and Office 2003, ITServices will no longer be in a position to fully support anyone using these products at Queen's. This means that, if you are using Windows XP or Office 2003 after this date and you run into issues, ITServices will not be able to assist you.

You are advised to upgrade your operating system to a supported release of Windows 7 or 8, and to update to the current version of Microsoft Office. Queen's faculty and staff are licensed for both products. Windows can be obtained from the Campus Computer Store, and Office can be downloaded from the Software Centre in MyQueensU.

Please note:

  • If you are a faculty or staff member using Windows XP, you should first contact your ITAdmin Rep to inquire whether your department recommends upgrading your operating system, or upgrading your computer.
  • The IT Support Centre can assist with the evaluation of your system and will make recommendations if requested.
