ITServices Outreach Brown Bag - Friday, November 30

 

ITServices’ next Outreach Brown Bag will be held on Friday, November 30, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, in the Mackintosh-Corry Hall B176 Lecture Theatre. Outreach Brown Bags are an opportunity for us to share IT-related news with the community, and this will be a supersized, half-day session because we have lots of information to share! Kicking things off will be our keynote speaker, Bo Wandschneider, Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice-Principal (Information Technology Services), who will speak about the move to externally hosted solutions for the new student email service. 

 

Refreshments will be provided; everyone is welcome.

Keynote Address:  Transformational Change at Queen’s – Moving to the Cloud for Student Email   


Bo Wandschneider, CIO/AVP

Bo Wandschneider, CIO and AVP (Information Technology Services), will discuss the move toward externally hosted (cloud) solutions as a transformational step in the delivery of enterprise services to the Queen’s community. He will address this in the context of moving undergraduate students to Microsoft Office 365 in early 2013 for the delivery of student email and calendar services, a transition that will significantly enhance the student experience. Of particular note are the extensive due diligence activities undertaken before moving in this direction – engaging the campus community, contract negotiations with Microsoft, and the execution of a Privacy Risk Assessment.

Microsoft Office 365:  A New Email Direction for Undergraduate Students

 

Mike Smith, Project Lead, Student Email Migration

Mike will present Microsoft Office 365 (O365) as the new solution for student email, calendaring, tasks, and contacts. O365 offers a feature-rich web interface, seamless integration with mobile devices, larger mailbox quota, and an infrastructure that’s compatible with the new email and calendar service introduced earlier this year for staff, faculty and graduate students. At this presentation you will learn how this solution was chosen, the benefits of the new service, and details about the migration process and timeline.

Introducing the Project Portfolio Office

 

Jim Carse, Director, Project Portfolio Office

Jim will introduce the Project Portfolio Office (PPO), a new unit in the CIO’s Office.  The PPO will provide leadership to a) increase the visibility and transparency of the enterprise projects portfolio, b) advance our internal project management standards and practices, c) provide support for IT Governance and Management, and d) standardize project risk assessments and monitoring.

Customer Satisfaction Survey Response

In April of this year, ITServices conducted a Customer Service Satisfaction Survey. For those who participated in the survey, thank you! Nancy will share the results of this survey and discuss next steps in enhancing customer satisfaction based on those findings.

Enterprise Document and Records Management

ITServices has been working with partners across the Queen’s community to identify an Enterprise Document and Records Management solution. This presentation will provide an update on that exploration, including the requirements gathering and Request for Proposal (RFP) processes.

Fundamental Improvements to Network Infrastructure

In Spring 2012, ITServices initiated a multi-phased project to fundamentally improve Queen’s network infrastructure. Hugh will discuss what’s been accomplished to date, and what is still to come to achieve the goals of the project.

Improving Campus Cellular Service

The goal of improving both indoor and outdoor cellular performance at Queen’s has long been identified. Hugh will describe the conversations that are now underway about how to achieve these goals.
