Sustainability Week LogoITS Celebrates Sustainability Week

Sustainability Week is a week-long event held at Queen's in the fall to celebrate and promote sustainability on and off campus, and to engage the campus community in becoming part of the solution.

The theme for Thursday, October 9 is "Waste Reduction", and ITS would like to remind everyone about the importance of responsible e-waste recycling. Environmental stewardship is a year-round endeavour and we work continuously to reduce e-waste and to minimize our ecological impact. Here are just a couple of the things that we do every day:

Free e-waste recycling

The Campus Computer Store is an official drop-off site for e-waste, which includes batteries and used ink and toner cartridges. They will also securely wipe or degauss any hard drives or storage devices that are dropped off, to ensure the protection of university data. The store is open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and located in Dupuis Hall, Room G25.

Embracing the cloud and virtualization

One of the strategic goals for ITS is to seek out efficiencies by retiring and replacing aging infrastructure with more cost-effective solutions like cloud services to meet the university's needs - for example, choosing Microsoft Office 365 for Queen's email and calendar service. We also continue our efforts to move services off of physical hardware to virtual infrastructure, replacing aging equipment with virtualization technology. In doing so, we recycle many of our departmental servers that have reached their end-of-life status.

As an update on our recent progress, Brad Hannah, Manager of Systems and Storage reports: "A year ago we had 113 physical servers, today we have 84. Our goal is to have only 32 left by this time next year. We now have 300 virtual machines, and there are over 20 more in the queue."

These efforts are not just limited to ITS - we regularly accept retired equipment from other departments and faculties on campus in order to help Queen's towards its sustainability goals, and we encourage everyone in the Queen's community to take advantage of these free services.
