Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is a suite of business applications that run on Windows and Mac computers, phones and tablets, and in the "cloud."  Microsoft uses a variety of names for its Office suite to differentiate between their distribution methods and their licensing restrictions.

Getting Started

Who Can Have It?

  • Office is available to active Faculty, Staff, Students and for use on departmental computers 

Are There Any Costs?

  • Microsoft Office (on campus version and Office 365 (personal version) is available at no cost
  • Microsoft Home Use Program has a fee associated with it.

How Do I Get It?

  • For University owned computers located on campus, download from the Software Centre at MyQueen'sU.ca.
  • For personal use (Office 365 version) log into Office 365, options, software
  • Microsoft's Home Use program via the website onthehub.com  (You will need to register with an active @queensu.ca email address)

How Do I Discontinue It?

  • Uninstall from your computer and/or:
    • The On-campus version requires the computer to be present on the Queen's network, or to be connected via VPN at least every 180 days
    • The Personal version requires the computer to connect to the internet every 30 days with a valid subscription (active account)

What if I Leave Queen's?

  • The On-campus and Personal versions will cease to function
  • The Home Use Program requires an active Queen's email.

Versions Available 

  • Office Professional 2016 ProPlus for Windows (On-Campus Computers)
    • Licensed for faculty and staff of Queen's University for use on university-owned computers.
    • Downloaded from MyQueen'sU free of charge. (The basic service is centrally funded.)
    • Authenticates using the Key Management Service (KMS) server at Queen's. 
    • Server must be contacted at least once every six months by the computer on which it is installed.  (Note:  This will happen in the background when you are connected to the internet.) 
  • Office 2016 for Mac (On-Campus Computers)
    • Licensed for faculty and staff of Queen's University for use on University owned computers
    • Downloaded from MyQueen'sU free of charge. (The basic service is centrally funded.)
    • Authenticates using the Key Management Service (KMS) server at Queen's. 
    • Server must be contacted at least once every six months by the computer on which it is installed.  (Note:  This will happen in the background when you are connected to the internet.) 
  • Office 365 ProPlus Windows and Mac Versions(Personal/Home Based Computers)
    • Provided free to students, faculty and staff.
    • Can be installed on up to 5 computers used by you (personal and/or Queen's owned) and on unlimited mobile devices.
    • The most current version of Office that is in production Note: The default version of Office that is installed (Windows or Mac) is determined by the Operating System of the computer used to initiate the download. 
    • Updates automatically when newer versions is available.
    • The Office suite is downloaded to the user's personal computer.
    • It is a subscription license that requires logging into Office 365 every 30 days
    • Download instructions for Mac computers

    • Install on Mobile Devices
  •  Office 2016 Professional for Windows and Macs (Personal Home Based Computers) 
    • Can be purchased for a small fee by faculty and staff for use on their home computers when Office 365 ProPlus is not a viable option
    • Download direct from the Home Use website
    • This license has eligibility requirements and requires you to be employed with the University.
    • Requires registration with an active @queensu.ca address.
