Naming Conventions

To be consistent with the Queen's domain naming convention, ITServices recommends web space be setup with a name similar to the natural queensu.ca directory structure, however sub-domains and separate domains are also possible for an additional fee.

    Natural Directory Structure

    Additional Fee:

We recommend this approach since this is the most common type of name within the Queen's University network. This also portraits an immediate Queen's University identity to a site visitor since "queensu.ca" is the first part of the name.

    Sub-Domain Structure

    • Example: yourname.queensu.ca

    Additional Fee:

Under certain circumstances it may be desired to have the unique name of a department, group, etc, before the main Queen's name. In these cases ITServices can provide a sub-domain.

    Separate Domain / Virtual Hosting

    • Example: yourname.ca, yourname.com, yourname.net, etc

    Additional Fee:

Virtual web hosting allows a department, group or organisation that has a web site on an ITServices managed UNIX server to have a domain name that uniquely identifies them. For more information please review the Unix Virtual Web Hosting Policy.

    • Note: There are other factors and steps (which may incur additional costs) involved in using the virtually hosted option. For people unfamiliar with this process, ITServices strongly recommends a consultation session to go over these details. Please the IT Support Centre for additional information or to setup a free consultation.
