Office 2016 for Mac from Office 365

Office 365 ProPlus is a subscription-based service that provides current faculty, students and staff (retirees and alumni are not included, sorry) with the latest versions of Microsoft Office for use on their personal PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones at no cost. Office Online apps are included and lets users open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote documents in a web browser.

Download Office ProPlus to your computer

There are three methods that can be used to download Office ProPlus from Office 365.  All staff, students and faculty who have their email on Office 365 can use either of the three methods.  The first method (through the Microsoft Portal) is the only way that faculty who have their email onpremise (on the exchange server)  can access Office 365 ProPlus. 

Method 1:  Sign-in to the Microsoft Portal

Faculty who have opted out of Office 365 (their email and calendar are on the on-premise Exchange server) must use this method to download and install Office ProPlus.

Faculty, Staff, and students who have their email and calendar on Office 365 (cloud) can also use this method.

  1. Log into the Microsoft Portal
    • Enter your Queen's netid@queensu.ca email address. (Note: Do not use your email alias here.  It will only work for your netid@queensu.ca email address) 
    • Note: As soon as you tab or click outside the email address field, you will be redirected to the Queen's login page.

  2. The Queen's Office 365 Email and Calendar login page will open
    • Enter your netid@queensu.ca email address 
    • enter your Netid Password
    • Click the Sign In button

  3. The Software tab will open
    • Select Office from the left navigation menu
    • From here you can install the latest version of Office for Mac
    • You can check the system requirements before you begin the install
    • Click the install button

  4. The just a few more steps...  screen will open
    • This screen shows you the process you will go through to install Office 2016
    • The Do you want to run or save... dialogue box will open at the bottom of the screen
    • Click Run to begin the download
    • Note: Once the download begins you can click the Close button to close this screen. 
    • The download screen will open

Method 2: Office 365 - Settings Menu

Faculty, staff, and students who have their email and calendar on Office 365 can use this method, or the next method, to download Office ProPlus (currently Office 2016).

This method provides

  • access to other software to install
  • access to deactivate an installation of Office ProPlus

  1. Log into Office 365
  2. Open the Settings menu
    • Select Office 365 ...

  4. The Software menu will open
    • To install the current version of Office click the Install button
    • Note:  you can Review system requirements if you are not sure your computer will support Office 2016
    • You have the option to install Office for Mac 2011 instead
    • Note:  The software menu provides links to other software that you can download

  5. The Just a few more steps... screen will open
    • This screen shows you the process you will go through to install Office 2016

    • Click Run to begin the download

Method 3: Office 365 - Apps Menu

Faculty, staff, and students who have their email and calendar on Office 365 can use this method, or the next method, to download Office ProPlus (currently Office 2016).

    • From the upper left corner select Office 365

  3. The Office 365 Apps menu will open
    • From the upper right corner select Install Office 2016
    • Note:  to install other software click the Other installs link

    • This screen shows you the process you will go through to install Office 2016

    • Click Run to begin the download
    • Note: Once the download begins you can click the Close button to close this screen.

Install Office ProPlus on Your Computer

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation

  1. The Just a few more steps... screen will open
    • This screen shows the steps involved - Download, Install, Sign in to Activate
    • Click the Close button
    • The Office software is downloading to your computer.
    • You will see screens showing where you are in the process

  2. When the download is complete and you are ready to install Office, from the menu select the Download icon

  3. The Downloads screen will open
    • Click on the Microsoft Office Install.pkg

  4. The Welcome to the Microsoft Office 2016 Mac Installer screen will open
    • Click the Continue button

  5. The Install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac will begin
    • You will be asked to select How do you want to install this software?
    • Select Install for all users of this computer
    • Click the Continue button

  6. The Standard Install screen will open
    • Note: if you want to change where the software will be installed you can do so on this screen.
    • Click the Install button

  7. When the Installation is complete, The installation was successful screen will open
    • Click the Close button

Activate Office ProPlus on Your Computer

Your installation will not be complete until you log into Office 365 to activate Office.  Each of the applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) will have an Activate Office.  We will activate through Outlook

  1. Before you can use Office you will need to activate it.  Since the email is the most often used app we will Activate Office through Outlook
    • Open the Applications folder (Finder -> Go Menu -> Applications) or keyboard shortcut (Command+Shift+A) when in finder
    • Locate the Outlook app (or any of the other Office apps)
    • Open the app

  2. Outlook will launch
    • Note the there is no data in Outlook
    • From the Outlook menu select Activate Office

  3. The Outlook 2016 for Mac Sign in screen will open
    • Enter your Queen's email address (Note: this should be your NetID@queensu.ca email address, not an email alias
    • Click the Next button

  4. The We Need a Little More Help screen will open
    • Select the Work account option

  5. The Office 365 Sign In screen will open
    • In the NetID: field enter your netid@queensu.ca email address
    • in the Password: field enter your NetID password
    • Click the Sign In button

  6. The activation will be completed and the You're All Set screen will be displayed
    • Click the Start Using Outlook button

  7. The Outlook screen will re-open
    • You will see two sections:  Queensu and On My Computer
    • Your email is on the Queensu server and ready for you to use
    • Your email and folders will begin to sync to the On My Computer section
    • Office 2016 is ready to use.
    • Note: your subscription to Office 365 ProPlus needs to be renewed once every 90? days.  When required the Activate Office will once again show on the Outlook menu
