ResNet FAQs

ITS has gathered a listing of frequently asked questions. If you have a question that is not found on the list, please fill out the Online Support Form or call us at 613-533-6666.

Q. How do I setup ResNet on a wired computer?

Your computer needs to be verified and configured to use ResNet. Please follow these steps to complete this part of the process:

  1. Connect your computer to your network jack using an ethernet cable.
  2. Start up a web browser. You will be automatically forwarded to the Authentication website.
  3. Enter your NetID and password to accept the ResNet User Agreement and to register your computer.
  4. You will need to restart your computer. Once your computer has been restarted, you will have a fully activated internet connection. Note: some browsers cache websites. It may LOOK like you are still in quarantine when it's just that your browser is displaying a cached page. Clear your browser cache and try again.
Q. How do I setup ResNet on a wireless device?

If your room has wireless service, follow the instructions in the Wireless Networking Tutorials to connect to QueensuSecure_WPA2.

If your room does not have wireless service you may be able to connect your device directly to the wired ethernet connection (which may require a dongle or adapter) following the instructions for a wired computer. Or you may install your own wireless router on your ResNet connection, provided that it is properly secured and password protected, and that it does not interfere with other student’s or the campus systems.  See the instructions below for connecting your router to ResNet.

Q. How do I set up ResNet on my router?

Resisdence Technologies have published full tutorials for 5 major brands of routers.  Please visit the Residences website to review how to setup your router.  Drop in Sessions are also being offered during frosh week to help users with router setup.  Dates, times and locations will be posted in your Residence.

Note: If you have wireless service in your room, do not install your own router as it will conflict with the existing service and cause problems for you and your neighbors.

Note: Make sure your router is secured and protected with a password (and use one that is not the default one that comes with the router). Even if your router is new it may have old firmware - make sure it is up to date.  If your router is dropping connections or freezing up a firmware upgrade may resolve it.

You are responsible for all activity that passes through your router.

Q. Can I register for ResNet in advance from home?

No. When you register for ResNet your device is assigned an address that depends upon your location in residence.

Q. I'm having problems with NetReg/ResNet Activation!

The most common issues that cause problems with NetReg are:

  1. Trying to open an external webpage beginning with https:// may not redirect you to the ResNet Authentication website.  Try https://netreg.queensu.ca/cgi-bin/register.cgi
  2. Your browser may be lying to you.  Some browsers cache websites.  It may LOOK like you are being told you are still in quarantine when it's just a cached page.  Clear your browser cache and try again.
  3. You do not have a valid NetID and password. If you have forgotten your NetID and password contact ITS Support Centre for assistance.
  4. There is a limit to the number of characters in the password field of the ResNet form. If your password is particularly long (> 20 characters), try changing it to something shorter. See Manage Your Password.
  5. Your wireless adapter is interfering with your wired connection.  Try disabling the wireless adapter.  Most laptops have a switch or you can disable a connection through the Control Panel/Network Connections.
  6. Your computer may be configured with a manual configuration for Ethernet that is not compatible with ResNet.  Please ensure your ethernet adapter is configured to automatically obtain an ip address.

If you continue to have problems with ResNet Activation, contact ITS Support Centre for assistance, either by calling 613 533-6666 or by using the Help Form link at the bottom of this page.

Q. Does Queen's provide antivirus software to students?

Queen's University does not have licensed antivirus software for use by undergraduate students, alumni or Retirees.

  • ITS recommends Microsoft Security Essentials for unlicensed Windows 7 users.
  • Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 comes pre-installed with Windows Defender and do not require you to install Security Essentials.
  • Mac OS X users are encouraged to source an antivirus product of their choice.

The following reviews will allow you to compare free and commercial AV programs that can be downloaded or purchased online.  Please note that Windows 8 and 10 come preloaded with Windows Defender.

Q. How do I setup ResNet if I have more than one wired computer?

If you have more than one wired computer, and you aren't using a router, you will need to connect the other computers to your ResNet connection and complete the ResNet configuration and NetReg registration processes. You may register up to 5 devices on ResNet.

Q. I want to opt out of ResNet and use another ISP. Can I?

You can not opt out of ResNet - see Queen's University Residences - Internet Services.

If you have other questions, please email Residence Services at reshouse@queensu.ca.

Q. My ResNet network connection is really slow or it disconnects a lot...  Who do I report this to?
Contact the ITS Support Centre for assistance, either by calling 613-533-6666 or by using the Help Form link at the bottom of this page.
Q. Can I use my gaming machine (XBox, etc.) on ResNet?

If you aren’t using a router, gaming machines must be registered manually for ResNet using this form. Gaming machines are permitted on ResNet, but they will be shut down if they cause a problem.
