ITS Supported Software

Information Technology Services provides four levels of software support to the Queen's community:

Software supported by ITS are assigned one of these support levels.  Any software not explicitly assigned a support level will have a level of Referral

First consideration for support will be decided upon by the operating system of the computer. If the operating system on the machine falls under the Expired category, all applications on the machine will default to the Referral category.  ITS staff will strongly encourage and assist users to upgrade expired operating systems and applications, allowing full support in the future.

Software Support Statement -- Expand to view explanations of our levels of support:

  • Software which is commonly used by Queen's students, faculty, and staff in order to fulfill the academic and business requirements of the university.  ITS will assist you with acquisition, installation and basic use functionality.  ITS may refer you to the manufacturer of the software product in question for more advanced use support.
  • ITS will assist the user in obtaining and installing the software being distributed by ITS on supported Operating Systems. If problems are encountered in the use of the software, support will be referred back to the Software Company for assistance.
  • Any software that does not appear on the Supported Software list will automatically default to this category of support.  Due to limitations of resources available at the University level, ITS cannot fully support all software available on the open market.  IT Support Staff will assist users in finding alternate support by referring to online support sites, vendor online support, or vendor email/phone support.
  • Software that has undergone a major revision by the vendor and requires ITS to test it against our current infrastructure and administrative systems for compatibility before determining final support state.  These products will have limited support during this phase.
  • Software that is no longer supported by ITS will be defaulted to Referral level of support.  When software changes to Expired Support, ITS will provide notification to campus for a period of four months before the change in support.  All notifications will be provided on our software list with the date of expiry and will be sent to all ITAdmin representatives.  All expired software will be listed in the expired software table for a period of one year.
  • Note:  Software that is no longer supported by the vendor will cease to be supported by ITS.  People with issues with "Expired Support" software will be directed to the vendor or websites for further support.

 

Change in Level of Support

  • ITS will notify the Queen's community of any changes in the level of support four months in advance.  This information will be posted on the ITS website and emailed to all departmental ITAdmin representatives.

Operating System

ITS encourages members of the Queen's Community to ensure that they have a current, fully supported by the vendor, operating system at all times. Please note that newly released operating systems will be supported as Transitional.  Feel free to contact the IT Support Centre for information on supported Operating Systems.
