In order to install an application or run a tweak, select the Task Manager from the File menu of the Application Manager or off the right-click menu for the Ida icon in the Task Bar. Or click on the balloon (saying Ida has recommendations) off the Ida icon in the Task Bar
The Task Manager handles tasks, such as installs, uninstalls, re-installs and tweaks.
Ida will recommend tasks that it thinks are appropriate. If it can install a newer version of site licensed or unrestricted software it will recommend the update. If it sees that the user has been given access to restricted software it will recommend that the software be installed.
Ida will check with the Microsoft Security Center in the operating system to see if the PC has any anti-virus software installed. If Ida is told that no anti-virus software is installed, it will recommend that the anti-virus product that is site licensed for Queen's University - Symantec Endpoint Protection - be installed. If Ida does not recommend the install of Symantec Endpoint Protection then you should check for other anti-virus software - and if any is installed, uninstall it before installing Symantec Endpoint Protection. Installing 2 anti-virus programs on the same PC can render the PC useless as the two programs may fight with each-other for control.
To see a full list of what software is available through Ida (for the operating system of the PC), select Install... off the Packages menu.
If the user wishes to install any other software they can select it in the list and click on Add. Ida will add it to the list in the Task Manager. If the software is restricted and the netid provided does not have download access that install task will fail.
If the user wishes to uninstall existing software, right-click the icon for the software in the Application Manager and select Uninstall from the menu. That will open the Task Manager window and insert the uninstall task in the list of tasks .If Uninstall is not available on the menu, it means that Ida is unable to uninstall that program - try the uninstall from theControl Panel.
If the user wishes to reinstall existing software, right-click the icon for the software in the Application Manager and select Reinstall from the menu. That will open the Task Manager window and insert the reinstall task in the list of tasks .If Reinstall is not available on the menu, it means that Ida is unable to reinstall that program - try uninstalling it and then installing it again.
To see a list of tweaks that are available select Add off the Tweaks menu. If the user wishes to run any of the tweaks they can select it in the list and click on Add. Ida will add it to the list in the Task Manager. If the tweak is restricted and the netid provided does not have download access that task will fail.
When a software package or tweak is selected in the list in the Task Manager or in the Add Task (Install Package) or Add Tweaks windows, the Details section will appear which will have a short description of the task and a link to more information. If a task is recommended it will list the reason for the recommendation.
Once the user is satisfied with the list of tasks for Ida, they click on Submit.
If any recommended task in the list is unchecked when the list is submitted, Ida will ask if these tasks should be hidden. If they are hidden they won't appear in the task list the next time the Task Manager is opened. The list of hidden tasks can be retrieved by checking the box to View hidden recommendations in the Task Manager window.
If any of the software installs selected require the acceptance of a license agreement, Ida will prompt for these to be accepted before proceeding.
Ida may also prompt for a netid and password before proceeding to download and install the software. Some software is restricted to certain users who have paid for a license or have an account set up to use the software. Some software is restricted to Queen's users - users can prove they are Queen's users by entering their netid and password.
Note: Ida requires a network connection to download software or the code for a tweak.
When Ida completes a task or as much of a task as it can, it reports its status in the Ida Results Manager. If a reboot is required before the requested tasks can continue the Results Manager will indicate this, Ida will offer to perform the reboot when the close button is clicked. Once Ida is started after the reboot (Vista and Windows 7 users with UAC will have to click to launch it) it will attempt to continue its current set of tasks. Once all tasks are completed successfully there will be green check marks for each of them in the Results Manager.
