Microsoft Office Versions

Microsoft Office is a suite of business applications that run on Windows and Mac computers, phones and tablets, and in the "cloud."  Microsoft uses a variety of names for its Office suite to differentiate between their distribution methods and their licensing restrictions.  Microsoft does not recommend nor support the installation of mixed versions of Office on a Windows based computer.  To verify your version, open an Office Application, Click on File > Account.  If you have an "Updates Section", your version was installed from Office 365 and you can obtain Office 2016 from Office 365.  If you do not have an "Updates Section", you can install Office 2016 from MyQueensU, or you may remove the current version and install the subscription version from Office 365.

Office 2016 for Windows will be available to campus in February.

 Note: As of January 2016, Endnote is not yet supported in Office 2016 for Mac.  See Endnote website for details.

Office 2013/2016 ProPlus (Windows - Campus Computers)

  • Licensed for faculty and staff of Queen's University for use on University owned computers.
  • Downloaded from MyQueen'sU free of charge. (The basic service is centrally funded.)
  • Authenticates using the Key Management Service (KMS) server at Queen's. 
  • Server must be contacted at least once every six months by the computer on which it is installed.  (Note: This will happen in the background when you are connected to the internet.)
  • 32 and 64 bit versions are available.  Due to compatibility issues with add-ins, ITS encourages you to review Microsoft documentation before installing the 64 bit version.

Office 2011/2016  (Mac - Campus Computers)

  • Licensed for faculty and staff of Queen's University for use on University owned computers
  • Downloaded from MyQueen'sU free of charge.  (The basic service is centrally funded.)
  • Authenticates using the Key Management Service (KMS) server at Queen's
  • Server must be contacted at least once every six months by the computer on which it is installed.  (Note:  This will happen in the background when you are connected to the internet.)

Office 365 ProPlus (Windows and Macs - Personally and/or Queen's owned)

  • Provided free to active students, faculty and staff
  • Can be installed on up to 5 computers used by you (personal and/or Queen's owned)
  • The most current version of Office that is in production.  Note:  The version of Office that is installed (Windows or Mac) is determined by the Operating System of the computer used to initiate the download.
  • Updated automatically when newer version is available.
  • The Office suite is downloaded to the user's computer.
  • It is a subscription license that requires logging into Office 365 every 30 days
  • Download instructions for Mac computers
  • Download instructions for Windows computers

Office 2016 Professional (Windows and Macs - Personal Home Based Computers)

  • Can be purchased for a small fee by faculty and staff for use on their home computers when Office 365 ProPlus is not viable.
  • Download direct from the Home Use website
  • This license has eligibility requirements requiring you to be employed with the University.
  • Requires registration with an active @queensu.ca address
