Voice Services Replacement Project
In May 2016, ITS launched Phase 2 of the Voice Services Replacement (VSR) Project. The VSR Project is centered around the migration and replacement of our existing telephone system on campus. The replacement is driven largely by our need to keep our telephony platform in a supportable state, but it is also viewed as opportunity to augment and improve the way we communicate with each other on campus.
Some highlights of the project include:
- Full Skype for Business integration with telephone system
- Mobile phone software will allow users to make and receive calls from their work extension (if preferred)
- 'Click to call' functionality from web browsers and email
The planning phase is underway with an expected beginning to the implementation in March 2017. During the planning phase the project team will be reaching out to many stakeholders to better understand specific user needs.
Update - March 3rd, 2017
The Voice Replacement Service RFP has now been closed, with no award given to any of the proponents who submitted a proposal. ITS will be re-evaluating the situation and we will keep you informed as the “next steps” are developed over the coming weeks.
Update - February 1st, 2017
ITS is nearly completion of the RFP process which will help determine Queen's strategic unified communications partner. We anticipate negotiatons will begin mid February.
Update - December 9, 2016
An ITS Skype for Business handset pick-up and drop-in clinic took place on December 7, 2016. Staff were given the opportunity to get their new handsets, set it up and get some basic lessons on phone usage. We had 47 staff visit during the day. On December 12, 2016, we will have the opportunity to run our second drop-in clinic for the remaining staff.
Update - November 7, 2016
Skype for Business handset deployment to ITS has been delayed due to additional networking implementation work. Although the project tem is excited to deploy the handsets, they also recognize that encountering these issues well ahead of the wider implementation is beneficial and will save time and effort in the future deployment.
We have sent out a survey to all ITS staff intent on determining what kind of phone user they are: minimal to power user and we asked for staff to identify themselves if they were interested in being "early adopters". The survey had very strong return rate and many early adopters. We currently anticipate the first group of early adopters will have Skype for Business handsets by the week of November 21, 2016.
Update - August 2, 2016
Beginning in September 2016, new handsets will be deployed to the ITS staff. The new handsets will only have Skype for Business functionality, and do not offer inbound or outbound telephone access, however, the deployment will be instrumental in establishing deployment guidelines, support documentation and improve awareness in the organization.
