News Menu Block

 

Site Administrators can manage the News Menu Block

 

 


When your web site is first created, by default, it will have two speciality blocks displayed in the Sidebar First area of the screen (left of screen):  Quick Links menu block and News Menu block.  These blocks appear on the main page. These speciality blocks can be populated, moved or deleted

 

Remove News Block

  1. From the Maintenance Menu select Structure
    • From the Structure menu select Blocks

  2. The list of Blocks will open
    • scroll down to the Sidebar First area
    • Locate the News block.  There is no delete button for this block.  The block itself cannot be deleted, but it can be assigned to another region.
    • Click the Region drop down menu and select None
    • The News block will be immediately moved from the Sidebar First area  to the Disabled  area.

  3. The Sidebar First area no longer has the News 
    • The Disabled section now shows the News block 
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Save Blocks button

  4. The block settings have been updated message will be displayed 
    • Click the Home button to return to the Home page

Add The News Block

  1. From the Maintenance Menu select Structure
    • From the Structure menu select Blocks

  2. The Blocks menu will open 
    • Scroll down to the  Disabled section and locate the News block
    • From the drop down menu select Sidebar First, or another location of your choosing.
    • The News  block will immediately be moved to the Sidebar First section
    • Click the Save button

  3. The Block Settings have been updated  message will appear at the top of the Blocks menu 
    • View News is now located under the Sidebar First section
    • If you need to make changes you can click the Configure button. 
    • Click the Home button to return to the main web page

Add a News Item

 

  1. News items will appear in the News block on the Home page of your web site and on the News menu tab.
    • To create a News item click the Create a Page button
  2. The Edit Basic page screen opens
    • Enter the Title for the News Item
    • Enter the body for the New Item
    • Scroll down to the Tags area and  check the box beside News 
    • If you do not provide a parent item for the News Item it will appear in the News Block and under the News menu.
    • If you choose to provide a parent item for the News Item, it will appear under the parent item and under the News Block and News menu. 
    • Click the Save button
  3. The News Item will not be visible until the page has been published 
    • Click the View draft tab
    • From the Set moderation state: drop down menu select Published
    • Note that at the bottom of the page the Tags:  News is shown
    • Click the Apply button
  4. Click Home to return to your main web page
    • The News item appears in the News block
  5. Click the News menu
    • The News item appears in the News menu

Delete a News Item

 

  1. Navigate to your News item 
    • Click the New draft tab
  2. A New Draft of your item will open  
    • Scroll down to the Tags area
    • Uncheck the box beside News
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the screen
    • Click the Save button
  3. Click the View Draft tab to select it 
    • From the Set moderation state menu select Published
    • Click the Apply button
  4. Return to the Home menu
    • The News Item is no longer listed in the News Block.
    • Note that the News block still has five items. An older news item is now visible. 
    • The News Item has also been removed from the News Menu.
    • Note:  if you saved the page under a separate parent page, then the page still exists, it just isn't a news item any longer.
  5. Caution
    • Under the News Menu each item has a Configure menu (the icon looks like the clog)
    • The Configure menu has a Delete item
  6. If you select the Delete item you will receive a warning This action cannot be undone.
    • Note that the breadcrumbs show the path where the file was saved, not just the News menu.
    • If you truly want to delete this News Item and its corresponding page click the Delete button. 
    • If you want to remove the page from the News Block and News Menu but keep the corresponding page click the Cancel button.
