JAPN 200 - Introductory Japanese II

Course Outline

This course is designed for students who have basic Japanese language proficiency acquired through Japanese 100 or its equivalent (i.e. 100 hours of introductory Japanese). The course seeks the simultaneous progression of four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as becoming familiar with aspects of Japanese culture and conducts (e.g. greetings, gestures, attentiveness) that are necessary for language competence. Approximately 160 new Kanji will be introduced. 

By the end of the course, students are expected to have a solid grasp of the basic grammar and to be able to;

- communicate one's views and carry on conversations on a variety of familiar topics and in uncomplicated situations.
- understand ideas and most details on familiar topics expressed through a series of sentences, through some form of media, and through text.
- connect sentences in order to describe experiences, events, and opinions, in speaking or in writing.

Interview Project

Two opportunities to interview Japanese people will be arranged for you (October and February). For the second one, you are expected to find a theme for your interview and to prepare questions to deepen your knowledge about the theme. The interview project also consists of a presentation in class, using PowerPoint, about what you have learned from the interview, as well as submission of the PowerPoint file. Details will be discussed in class.

Skype-pal Project

You will be matched with a Japanese student in Japan and encouraged to talk with her/him over Skype once a week or so. Detail will be discussed in class.

Policy (strictly observed)

  1. If another course is overlapping with JPN200, you must choose one course over the other.
  2. Make up quizzes will not be given  without the instructor's PRIOR permission . If you occur to have to miss a class, please provide legitimate reason with a dated official document in advance . With a legitimate reason and enough time allowance, make-up quizzes may be arranged.
  3. Assignments should be submitted in class or by email on the due date. Please submit by one hour after the class at the latest. Any point will be given to late assignment.
  4. No food, drinks, chewing gum, or caps in class.
  5. Use of cellphone and laptop in the classroom should be restrained, except for presentations. When the use of cellphone is spotted in class, it will be factored into your class participation.

Your responsibilities

As only the accumulation of daily effort can accomplish language learning, you are expected to spend 1-2 hours outside of class for preparation and review of each class. For preparation, check the weekly schedule, and before we start a new lesson in class, you should memorize the new words of the chapter, read the grammatical explanations.Listening to the Audio files are also recommended.


You are expected to attend all classes and to be punctual.  If you have to be absent from a class, please let instructor know beforehand every time, so that we can arrange for your work to be made up, as well as your absence to be counted properly.  

*If you miss more than one fourth of the classes for a semester (12 classes) or over the full academic year (24 classes), without a proper written explanation, the term mark before the final exam automatically become 49% .

Given the seriousness of these matters, actions which contravene the regulation on academic integrity carry sanctions that can range from a warning or the loss of grades on an assignment to the failure of a course to a requirement to withdraw from the university.
