The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Linguistic Program) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates interested in serving as a Teaching Assistant for the following course:
LING 475/9.0 Field Methods in Linguistics 3S/P;1.5L
This course provides instruction in method and procedure in linguistic fieldwork. The course investigates the syntax, morphology and phonology of a language unfamiliar to the participants. The instruction is structured around weekly fieldwork sessions dedicated to data collection working with a native speaker of the language, and weekly workshops devoted to analysis. The course contains an intensive independent study component.
PREREQUISITE 6.0 units at the 300 level in LING, or permission of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
Candidates should speak Kinyarwanda as their first language and be able to communicate with English speaking students. The Teaching Assistant for ling 475 will serve as a Kinyarwanda Language Consultant. The responsibilities of the Language Consultant include translating sentences from English to Kinyarwanda as well as answering questions regarding meaning, grammaticality and pronunciation of sentences in Kinyarwanda. The successful candidate will be responsible for working five hours a week. This includes holding two weekly office hours as well as attending two weekly Lab meetings scheduled as follows: Tuesdays 1:00-2:30 and Thursdays 11:30 – 1:00.
Queen's University and the Public Service Alliance of Canada have formed a new Collective Agreement for Graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows. Teaching Assistant positions within the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures are advertised in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement.
Positions will remain posted until they have been filled (no less than 10 calendar days).
TA-ships will not be offered to candidates in Group B, C or D until the qualified candidates in Group A have been exhausted. In addition, we will do our best to match your preference to course offerings.
First Preference – Group A: for qualified graduate students registered as:
(i) students in a department or program in which the TA-ship will be offered; or
(ii) students in an interdisciplinary program with TA budget resources,
and for whom the TA-ship has been granted as part of the funding commitment offered by Queen's University.
Second Preference – Group B: for qualified graduate students registered as:
(i) students in a department or program in which the TA-ship will be offered; or
(ii) students in an interdisciplinary program with TA budget resources,
and for whom
(iii) the TA-ship will not form part of the funding commitment offered by Queen's University; or
(iv) there is currently no funding commitment provided by Queen's University.
Third Preference – Group C: for qualified graduate students that have previously held a TA-ship or TF-ship for the Employer.
Fourth Preference – Group D: for qualified graduate students that have not yet met the criteria as set out in A, B, or C.
