Brittney

Brittney is a second year student, with a major in Life Sciences and a minor in Italian. She is a recipient of the Queen's University Excellence Scholarship. She sees the importance of learning Italian for both scholarly and personal reasons:

"Coming into University, I was excited to explore the freedom that came with choosing courses that I had a genuine interest in. In high school, there were no language electives beside French, so choosing Italian as my minor was a very easy decision. This minor allows me to become a more well rounded student, provides balance to my current Bachelor of Science workload and, most importantly, allows me to become closer with my Italian grandparents. Growing up, I had always been surrounded by the language through my grandparents and instantly loved it.

Pursuing an Italian minor is a great experience! With any new language, you have to learn the specific grammatical rules and syntax. This, however, all becomes worth it when you can watch a movie or read an expert in Italian and understand everything! Being able to call my grandparents from school and practice with them is such a rewarding experience. The professors are simply amazing! They truly have a passion for the language they teach and it is contagious! They encourage you to try and not be afraid to make mistakes. They are approachable and want you to succeed. My favourite quote from one of my professors is, ”If the Italian you are speaking doesn’t sound like music, then something is wrong”. I always keep this in mind when practicing my oral skills and it makes all the difference.

I feel that this minor will provide me with the skills I need to balance the work of my science degree with my minor. I hope that this aspect of my undergraduate degree will differentiate me in the workforce and allow me to travel in the future, whether it be for work or pleasure.

I am currently considering going on an academic exchange to Italy in my undergraduate career so I can put all that I have learned about the Italian language and culture into action! Also right here at Queen’s, I hope to volunteer with the Queen’s University International Centre (QUIC) by interacting with international students. "
