Samantha Ruckenstein

Samantha is a third year student majoring in Spanish and minoring in Linguistics. She is a recipient of Queen's University Excellence Scholarship and well as Wallace Near Prize in Spanish. She chose major in Hispanic Studies because of the joy learning Spanish gives her:

“I started learning Spanish when I went on exchange in high school. I lived in Madrid for 3 months and learned most of my Spanish base there and I fell in love with the language and culture.  So when it came down to picking my post-secondary path I decided to go into Hispanic Studies. I decided to pursue this degree because it was the one major I could think of that would truly make me happy – and who doesn’t want to be happy?

Two years later and I still I love my major! It is both fun and challenging as I come across more and more information that I ever dreamed to learn. It interacts perfectly with my minor, linguistics, as I study Spanish grammar, etc. My favourite aspect about the major is the infectious passion of all of the professors. They are always there to help if you have questions and truly care about your success.

I am the incoming Queen’s Spanish and Latin American Students’ Association (QSALSA) President and have been very involved in that student club over the past two years. Through the knowledge that I obtained in my Spanish classes I have felt confident enough to even be a Spanish conversation class teacher in the Association. I am also happy to have gained the experience in teaching Spanish.

In the future, I would like to go forward with a Master’s program and maybe even a PhD so that I can become a professor of Hispanic Studies or go into translation/interpretation work.”
