NOTE: The cost for taking the Grade VI Piano Equivalency Exam is $50.00. Please make sure you stop by the School of Music office to pick up your form and pay your $50.00 fee prior to trying this Exam. You will be unable to take the Exam without presenting the instructor with your form.

Sight reading

Simple two-voice contrapuntal texture, minimum Grade IV level [Music for Millions, Vol. 27; see above]. Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to maintain consistent pulse with minimal visual reference to the keyboard.

Technique

All technical requirements to be done two octaves, hands together, at a steady tempo with logical fingering. Knowledge of all major and minor keys is expected although tests are normally restricted to those with up to four accidentals. Scales (major, harmonic and melodic minor); triads with inversions (solid and broken); arpeggios.

Rudiments

Rapid visual recognition and playing of root position triads on any note (major, minor, diminished, augmented). Fluent playing of root position dominant and diminished seventh chords in any major or minor key; knowledge of resolution. Knowledge of all diatonic triads in all keys with up to four accidentals. Simple single-line transposition by sight.

Repertoire and Studies

Grade VI repertoire (3) and studies (2) requirements to be played with rhythmic control and sense of line. Memory of these pieces is not required. See below for a list of sample repertoire at the required level of difficulty.
