Course Number: 220/6.0 1P (Course Code Explanation)
Open To: B.Mus. and B.Mus./B.Ed. students
Area(s): Applied Music
Term(s): A, B
Continuation of MUSC 120/6.0.
NOTE B.Mus. students are charged a supplemental annual fee of $450 for one-hour applied instrument or voice lessons.
NOTE Students who do not hold the prerequisite may audition for admission to this course. They must obtain a grade of A- in the jury examination component of MUSC 121/6.0 or MUSC 124/6.0 and receive recommendation of the jury.
This course involves private instrumental or vocal instruction for B.Mus. students who have successfully auditioned for admission to this stream. Each course consists of 23 individual weekly lessons (or an equivalent amount of time every fortnight). Weekly practice time must justify the full credit involved.
Evaluation of the course is based on work accomplished in the course of the year, assessed by the instructor in consultation with the area coordinator. Evaluation includes technical and interpretive development, application, motivation and attitude, as well as participation in studio recitals and other events organized by the School of Music. A significantly higher level of achievement (than in the MUSC x21 series) is expected, as reflected in level and quantity of repertoire, practice commitment and participation in appropriate events.
Students in MUSC 220 are required to enroll concurrently in MUSC 225 (Performance Recital), in which they perform a public recital in March or April in lieu of a jury.
Students registered in MUSC 220 are required to attend six concerts per term, to a total of 12 concerts per academic session. This required concert attendance accounts for 10 per cent of the teacher’s component of the Applied Study mark at the end of the year. Mandatory Concert Attendance guidelines are provided to students in their first year by the D.S.C.
The audition is held in the first week of classes in September. Upper year students may apply (in April) to audition for MUSC 220 if they receive a minimum grade of 80% in the jury examination component of MUSC 121 or 124 the previous year and are recommended by their jury.
Note: In addition to the regular course fee, there is an extra fee to cover the cost of private lessons. The extra fee is $450 for 2011/12.
