A laboratory course emphasizing weekly field-based observations and supervised practice teaching experiences in music within schools and/or community organizations in conjunction with music education theory.
This course consists of field-based observations and supervised practice teaching experiences** within schools and/or community organizations. The course is one aspect of a partnership between Queen’s University, the Limestone District School Board, the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic School Board, and the Kingston Symphony (the Symphony Education Partnership - SEP). Students will present weekly prescribed lessons to grade 4 pupils, preparing the pupils for a Kingston Symphony concert in February. Follow-up lessons are presented for a minimum of two weeks after the concert.
Class activities include practice teaching in schools, small and large group discussion, singing, movement, and creative projects. Students will also critique the current elementary music curriculum of Ontario. Course evaluation consists of a Practicum Notebook (including observations of practice teaching), Thinking Journal, captures of required readings, and a final examination.
