An introduction to the methods, materials, and curriculum design suitable for teaching music to senior high school students.
This course introduces students to issues, methods, materials and curricula of music education for pupils in grades 9-12. Students will explore the role of conceptual teaching in general music and performance classrooms. Fund raising, concert programming and music advocacy will also be explored.
Class activities include simulations, role-play, classroom observation, lesson presentations in high school music classrooms, small and large group discussions, and creative projects. Students will learn to apply conducting skills, knowledge of music theory and history to lesson planning for senior high school. Students will also critique the current senior high school music curriculum of Ontario. Course evaluation will consist of a Teaching Package, thinking journal, reading assignments, and a final examination. A materials collection or Took Kit may also be required.
