The Samba Ensemble is dedicated to the music, culture, dance and performance of Brazilian Samba music. Following the traditional model of a Brazilian Samba School or Escola de Samba, both beginner and experienced musicians come together to learn to play contemporary Samba rhythms and patterns on many different drums, shakers, bells and tamborims that can be found in a traditional Brazilian samba band known as a Bateria. An ability to follow basic rhythm patterns on various drums is preferred but not essential. Open to non-B.Mus. students after audition, without credit.
The ensemble gives concerts several times per year, and performs throughout the community at various venues.
