Guillaume de Machaut (Circa 1300-1377); Poet, Musician or Mathematician?
An intensive stylistic and structural analytical study of the isorhythmic motets of Guillaume de Machaut (circa 1399-1377), from the perspective of conservative and progressive compositional tendencies. Discussion will focus on textual-musical relationships, textural and harmonic expansion, melodic syntax, as well as rhythmic complexity and metric manipulation within the genre, embracing the full gamut of the composer’s deployment of isorhythmic technical procedures and processes, and their ramifications within a poetic, musical and mathematical context.
