An introduction to the methods, materials, and curriculum design suitable for teaching music to pre-school and primary-aged school pupils.

Additional Information

This course introduces students to issues, methods, materials and curricula of music education for pupils in pre-school, kindergarten and grades 1-4. Students will explore issues relating to early childhood, early elementary education, the role of the media and the role of conceptual teaching in music education.

Class activities include simulations, role-play, classroom observation, lesson presentations**, small and large group discussions, singing, movement, and creative projects, including conceptual bulletin board displays. Students will learn to use traditional and non-traditional classroom instruments, and critique the current music curriculum of Ontario. Course evaluation will consist of a Thinking Journal, captures of required readings, lesson planning and assessment, critiques of media designed for the target audience (early childhood), and a final examination. A materials collection of Tool Kit may also be required.
