Five scholarships, which include The James Rini Memorial Scholarship and The Helen Lucile Allan Memorial Scholarship are provided annually by the Kingston Symphony Association for award to full-time students in the Bachelor of Music program, whose major instrument is orchestral. The scholarships are awarded on the recommendation of the School of Music on the basis of a competitive audition and satisfactory academic standing. Preference is given to candidates, whose major instrument is one of those in which a vacancy exists in the Kingston Symphony Orchestra at the time of audition. While the award of a scholarship does not automatically entitle the recipient to a position in the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, acceptance of a scholarship constitutes an obligation on the part of the recipient to become a member of the Kingston Symphony Orchestra for the entire academic year of the scholarship, should he or she be invited to do so in writing within three weeks of the award of the scholarship. In such cases, the scholar will receive the normal local player's fee for services.
