Kingston City Council will vote next month on the university's proposed renovations to existing buildings on the site of the new Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.

Queen’s made a presentation about outstanding heritage components in the performing arts centre’s design at council’s meeting last night. However, time constraints due to the accommodation of other delegations from out of town resulted in the vote on the university’s heritage proposals being moved forward to the next council meeting on September 7.

“We are grateful for the help, support and guidance provided by the city’s Heritage Committee, with whom we have worked over the past three years on this exciting, collaborative project,” said Ann Browne, Associate Vice-Principal (Facilities) in her presentation to council. “Queen’s will continue its commitment to ensure the success of our joint endeavour.”

The proposed renovations include preserving and restoring all interior windows, replacing some exterior windows with more sustainable reproductions, removing a chimney and refurbishing wood structures on the interior walls and ceilings for display.

“The university is committed to respecting the history of the buildings, while being fiscally responsible within our budget,” says Ms Browne.

The performing arts centre, to be built at 370 King Street West, will be a world-class teaching and performance venue for students, faculty and artists. It will promote collaborations among Queen’s and Kingston-area arts groups and encourage regional cultural tourism.
