Conference supports undergrad researchers
Any students looking to improve their chances of getting into grad school should head over to the Queen’s Learning Commons in the Stauffer Library on Thursday and Friday.
Inquiry@Queen’s is an academic conference designed to give undergrad students the opportunity to publically present their research findings. Not only is the conference a lot of fun, according to co-organizer Vicki Remenda, it also looks good on a resume.
“One student e-mailed to say that when she applied to grad school, the interviewers were very interested in the fact that she had presented her research at a conference because it showed she had taken some initiative,” says Professor Remenda who works in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering.
About 80 students will be taking part in the fourth annual conference.
The presentations are organized by themes, such as “Conceptualization of Self” and “Constructs of Control” that emerge from the abstracts. “We will place a geography student to present next to a drama student, next to an English student. They are looking at a similar topic through the lens of a different discipline,” adds Professor Remenda.
One of Professor Remenda’s favourite stories is when a psychology student came up to her after the conference and said “I wanted to tell you Inquiry@Queen’s is better than YouTube.’ The student had spent the whole day at the conference and soaked it all up.”
Principal Daniel Woolf will give the opening keynote address – entitled “A Historian Reflects on a few of His Eureka Moments” – at 10 am on Thursday.
