Dear Stauffer Friends host library "egg-stravaganza"

Early Friday morning, close to 1,500 eggs – some chocolate, some plastic – will be hidden in Stauffer Library. When the doors open at 8 am, Queen's community members will begin the hunt to find treats and treasures and celebrate last day of classes.

The students who organized the event are the creators of Dear Stauffer Friends, a popular Facebook page that features observations, witticisms and anecdotes about the largest library on campus. The two female upper-year students, who wish to remain anonymous, started the Facebook page at the beginning of October. Within 48 hours, 2,800 people “liked” the page; by Christmas, it had 4,000 fans.

“It's a positive space,” one of the creators says of the page. “It's mostly satirical, witty comments that are based on what we see and experience in the library.”

The students approached the library with the Easter egg hunt idea and received an overwhelmingly positive response. Local businesses have donated gift cards, and those who find plastic eggs can exchange them for a prize at the main desk.

“We like the way Dear Stauffer Friends highlights the sense of community at Queen's and in Stauffer Library in particular,” says Martha Whitehead, University Librarian. “It's wonderful to see the affection students feel for the library and each other.”

As for who's behind Dear Stauffer Friends, the creators of the page say they have no plans to reveal their identities, and will likely stop updating the page at the end of April.

“I just feel like it's such a nice thing to be anonymous,” says one of the creators. “I don't want praise for it, that's not why I did it. I've received feedback from people saying how much they love it, and that's enough for me.”

The Easter egg hunt begins at 8 am and will be on a “first-come, first-find” basis. To learn more about Dear Stauffer Friends, visit the Facebook page.
