The Equity Office recently released a report updating the Queen’s community on its activities over the past academic year and outlining some of its plans for 2012-13.

“The Equity Office continues to work with our partners to advance educational equity, employment equity, and accessibility,” says Irène Bujara, Director, Equity Office. “We look forward to supporting units on campus who are already doing great things to create a more inclusive environment and assisting them with their new goals.”

Some of the Equity Office’s highlights from the past academic year include:

• finalizing an Equity Diagnostic Tool for assessing and setting goals to improve access, retention and receptiveness to members of equity seeking groups;
• conducting the I Count Queen’s Equity Census, which had a high response rate, and the Equity Exit Survey for departing employees;
• offering equity training for nearly 200 faculty, staff and students serving on appointment, renewal, tenure, promotion and continuing appointment committees;
• launching a newsletter and Facebook page to keep the community more informed about innovative employment equity practices;
• helping develop and support the implementation of the university’s new accessibility framework, which included a town hall meeting and a subsequent report.

The Equity Office is working over the summer with Human Resources and the Human Rights Office to develop a new certificate program From Diversity to Inclusion in the Workplace. The program, scheduled to begin in January 2013, will give an opportunity for participants to gain knowledge and skills necessary for working and leading in an inclusive work environment.
