Fences up at new performing arts centre
Architects' rendering of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing ArtsWith all the fencing up and external services being installed, Queen’s University’s Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts is now a full construction site.
“Our current focus is on site preparation and the provision of external services such as sewer lines,” says Associate Vice-Principal (Facilities) Ann Browne.
“The architectural drawings are 80 per cent complete,” Ms Browne says. “We look forward to working with members of Kingston’s planning staff to confirm final details such as the stainless steel siding on part of the building’s exterior. The centre is going to be a wonderful showpiece on the city’s waterfront!”
Construction is expected to begin by early fall.
A report that proposes a sustainable operations and programming model for the centre is being developed, and the university is working with the city on a cultural arts facilities plan that will support all arts programming and audience generation for both Queen’s and Kingston.
Queen’s new $63-million complex, which includes an acoustically-superior concert hall, a “black box” theatre, screening room and rehearsal space, has been designed by eminent Norwegian and Canadian architectural firms Snohetta and ema. It is scheduled to open in Fall 2013.
Capital funding is now in place, with support coming from all three levels of government and generous donations from private benefactors, including $22 million from Drs. Alfred and Isabel Bader.
