Maclean’s rankings keep Queen’s in top five
Maclean’s magazine’s annual rankings keep Queen’s in fourth place overall among medical-doctoral universities in Canada. The category compares institutions with medical schools and comprehensive doctoral programs.
“These rankings confirm that although Queen’s is a mid-sized university, we are able to comfortably hold our own against much bigger schools,” says Principal Daniel Woolf. “Although rankings aren’t everything, they do affirm that we are a leading university on the national stage.”
Queen’s earned top marks again this year in a number of categories, ranking first in the country when it comes to the number of faculty members winning national awards, holdings per student in the library, and the overall operating expenditures devoted to student services.
Queen’s is also first when it comes to the proportion of students who graduate (90.8 per cent) and second overall for average entering grade (88.7 per cent).
The university also got high scores for the amount of money dedicated to scholarships and bursaries (2nd place) and the number of students winning national awards (3rd place).
Queen’s was ranked eighth out of 49 institutions on the national reputational ranking, earning sixth place in ‘highest quality’ and tenth for ‘most innovative’.
Queen’s has also been named among the country’s top 15 research universities according to the Research Infosource, who rank the top 50 annually. Queen’s has been named 9th for research intensity, a category that looks at sponsored research per full-time faculty member, and is in 13th overall with research income of just over $163 million, down slightly from 2011.
Total research income for Canada’s leading research universities only rose by 2.2 per cent in 2011, the smallest gain in the past decade.
