New accessibility framework approved
The university’s new accessibility framework has been approved by the Vice-Principals’ Operations Committee.
“The framework encourages the entire Queen's community to share in the accountability for achieving our accessibility priorities within fiscal realities,” says Alan Harrison, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).
A working group was established last spring to evaluate all aspects of accessibility on campus and develop a comprehensive and functional framework for complying with the provincial government’s accessibility standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
The framework is intended as a tool for addressing all aspects of AODA compliance on campus. Five priority areas have been identified including customer service, information and communication, employment, built environment, and education, training, and awareness.
The Equity Office will continue to coordinate ongoing communication, consultation, and collaboration with the Queen’s community – especially persons with disabilities – as it supports the implementation of the new framework.
An Executive Accessibility Steering Committee has been struck with a first order of business to select Priority Working Groups Team Leaders. This is the first step towards improved accessibility for everyone on our campus.
