Post-doctoral fellows vote to unionize

Post-doctoral fellows (PDFs) at Queen’s have voted in favour of representation by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).

Ballots cast last November were counted yesterday, July 13, at the Ontario Labour Relations Board after it was confirmed that the union had support from more than 40 per cent of the bargaining unit when it applied to be certified as their representative in collective bargaining.

The vote results were 62 in favour of unionization and 31 against.

“The university strongly supports our PDFs in their right to choose how they wish to organize and we respect the decision they have made,” says Deputy Provost Susan Cole. “We highly value the work of post-doctoral fellows at Queen’s and the university will work cooperatively with the union toward securing a first contract through a negotiated agreement.”

Regular updates on all negotiation activity at Queen’s will continue to be distributed through e-Queen’s and can be found, anytime, at http://queensu.ca/labournews.
