Jack Lee (Artsci'08) sails for charity

[Queen's alumnus Jack Lee]Queen's alumnus Jack Lee recently completed a circumnavigation of the United Kingdom.

On April 5, Queen’s alumnus Jack Lee (Artsci'08) embarked on an adventure. Sailing a 50-foot Bavaria sailboat and accompanied by four crew members, he set off from St. Katherine’s Dock in London on a mission to circumnavigate Great Britain.

Last Friday, he completed the journey, which has also raised more than $45,000 for charity to date.

“I chose the UK as it offers some spectacular and physically challenging sailing, as well as some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery on offer,” says Lee, who majored in economics at Queen’s. “I wanted something that would be a challenge and wasn’t just a walk in the park.”

Mr. Lee has been involved with sailing since childhood, first recreationally and then competitively. He was looking for a way to merge his passion for the sport with an inspiring cause when he came up with the plan to sail around the UK.

The journey raised money for both the Marine Conservation Society, which works to establish marine-protected areas, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation, which works with children to promote healthy living through an active lifestyle and a balanced diet.

Mr. Lee says the hardest part of the journey was enduring the damp, cold conditions that come with living on a boat for three months. However, he adds, there were plenty of amazing moments along the way.

“A highlight of the journey has been the fantastic diversity of wildlife around the coast of the UK,” he says.

“On numerous occasions the boat has been joined by pods of bottle-nosed and white-beaked dolphins and we have been fortunate enough to see, on two separate occasions, pods of killer whales as well as a basking shark!”

Donations are still being accepted. For more information on the journey and the charities involved, visit www.SailBritain.org.
