Rick Mercer urges Queen's to vote

Comedian Rick Mercer has recorded a special video message to Queen’s students, encouraging them to get involved in the ongoing provincial election campaign and be sure to vote.

“We are thrilled Rick Mercer took the time to send Queen’s students his thoughts on the importance of getting informed,” says Mira Dineen, Academic Affairs Commissioner for the Alma Mater Society (AMS). “It’s a funny but direct message and it reflects the significance of the youth vote. Education falls under provincial jurisdiction and making sure students know this is the first step to conveying the importance of this election.”

Both the AMS and the Society for Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) are running election awareness campaigns to increase student voter turnout.

“There’s a lot at stake in the upcoming provincial election for all students, from elementary schools to colleges to universities,” says SGPS President Jillian Burford-Grinnell. “Debt load, tuition, and faculty-student ratios are all rising. We need to ensure student views and voices are heard.”

Faculty, students and staff can vote on campus this week in an advance poll that will held on Wednesday September 21, Thursday September 22 and Friday September 23 between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm on the lower level of the JDUC.

The Queen’s community can also hear the candidates talk about the issues and ask them questions at a debate being held on Monday September 19 at 7:00 pm in Wallace Hall in the JDUC.

The election is Thursday October 6.
